First thoughts of Ghostbusters: Night Shift

Today, the first two images of the upcoming Ghostbusters: Night Shift animated series on Netflix have surfaced and I have some thoughts here.

I was actually present for the world premier of the logo and name at Ghostbusters Day in NYC just a few weeks ago. It was quite the exciting event to witness and be apart of. I also got a nice quick photo with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan!

Let’s take a lookie loo at the images shall we?

Some pretty cool looking stuff here. Obviously we’ll get more info and a better feel for what the series will be like once the trailer hits but these images have already lifted the spirits of many Ghostbusters fans and rightfully so. After Frozen Empire failed to grasp a bigger, more broader fan base and reconnect with a larger mainstream audience, fans were a bit concerned that it would be a while until we saw something new. Well, thanks to this series, it looks like it could be another chance to continue the Ghostbusters legacy.

My initial thoughts are:

1: I need more info on that giant train conductor-Sentinel looking ghost. You have my attention.

2: I love this animation style. It’s the same style from Spider-Man: Into The SpiderVerse and Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. I’m a massive animation junkie and imo, I think this style works for certain characters and properties. Especially when they take place in New York City. I can’t put my finger on it but it just feels right. NYC is a huge part of Ghostbusters and to see this new team in the shadow of such iconic buildings makes me happy.

3. NEW Ghostbusters members? Yes please. Let’s see some newer, younger characters that can help keep this franchise alive. This is the aspect that I’m most excited about. It will be a lot of fun to see new, fresh faces and see how the come along and work together.

4: From my perspective, an animated series could benefit Ghostbusters lore greatly. Maybe more so than a new movie series, which I wouldn’t be against but I feel like more people would be likely to check this out on a streaming service than head to the theater. Again, just me. I think this could reach a bigger audience.

5. Skateboarding Ghostbuster and Doggo sidekick are icons. Ok ok, I’m exaggerating for sure but this is a great teaser for sure. According to a source that was live for the trailer reveal, the dog is actually a Terror Dog puppy that is their companion, similar to Slimer is to the original team. Nice connection there!

6. NEW PROTON PACKS? Ok. I have to know. Allegedly these are “kitbashed” (or DIY for those who aren’t nerdy customizers like me) and could lead to some fun new technology and designs.

Ghostbusters: Night Shift drops on Netflix in 2027 and just based off these images alone, I’m sold. I can’t wait for the full trailer itself but until it drops, sign me up and strap a pack on my back, because I’m ready for this.
